While the rest of the industry chases screens, mass and autonomy, Toyota built a compact hatchback around a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, a proper manual gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system lifted from its rally programme. It is a car that seems engineered by people who actually like driving.<\/p>\n<h2 class='wp-block-heading'>The engine that should not work<\/h2>\n<p>Three cylinders producing 300 horsepower sounds like a recipe for stress and short engine life. In reality this little motor is a marvel, thrumming with a distinctive off-beat character and pulling cleanly to its redline. It is not silky, and that is the appeal \u2014 it has texture, personality, a willingness to be wrung out that smoother engines often lack.<\/p>\n<h2 class='wp-block-heading'>The handling<\/h2>\n<p>The adjustable all-wheel-drive system is the headline feature, letting you send more torque rearward for a playful balance or lock it 50:50 for maximum traction. On a damp, twisty road it is endlessly adjustable and confidence-inspiring. The manual gearbox is positive and mechanical, and the whole car feels tied down without being harsh.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>It rewards commitment and forgives mistakes \u2014 the rare combination that makes a great car for improving your craft.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class='wp-block-heading'>Practicality<\/h2>\n<p>This is the clever part. Underneath the rally hardware it is still a Corolla. The rear seats are usable, the boot is fine, fuel economy is reasonable if you behave, and Toyota&#8217;s reputation for reliability is not nothing when you are buying a performance car you intend to use hard.<\/p>\n<h2 class='wp-block-heading'>The verdict<\/h2>\n<p>The GR Corolla is not the fastest hot hatch, nor the most refined. What it offers instead is involvement, durability and a sense of purpose that money cannot always buy.
