How to Choose the Right Brake Fluid for Your Sports Car
Brake fluid is often overlooked, yet it is one of the most critical fluids in any performance car. Choosing the wrong type can lead to brake fade, component damage, or even complete brake failure on track.
The most important specification is the DOT rating. DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids are glycol-based and most common. DOT 4 has a higher boiling point — typically 230C dry and 155C wet — making it the minimum recommendation for any car that sees spirited driving. DOT 5 is silicone-based and should not be mixed with glycol fluids.
For serious track use, consider DOT 5.1 fluids which offer boiling points above 260C dry. Brands like Motul RBF 660, Castrol SRF, and Endless RF-650 are popular choices among track-day enthusiasts.
Remember to change your brake fluid every 1-2 years regardless of mileage. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air — which lowers its boiling point over time. Fresh fluid is cheap insurance against brake failure.
